- George Christian Steelhammer a longtime resident of Rochester, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at his home in Rochester.
He was born January 14, 1922 to Fritz Harold Steelhammer and Clara Miller Steelhammer in Nashua, Iowa.
George married Barbara Jean Sturdevant June 17, 1943, in Galvin, Washington. Mrs. Steelhammer died on October 15, 1999. On August 16, 2003, George married Eleanor (Tootie) Voight, who survives him. He leaves behind his Yorkie and special friend Molly.
George was a dairy farmer and also raised salmon at the family farm in Rochester. While dairy farming George was also a master sheetmetal craftsman and in the 1960's was co-founder of Chehalis Sheet Metal, which was later sold. George worked in the Bremerton naval shipyards during World War II.
George is survived by his five children; Eudora (Leonard) Carlson, Judy (Terry) Stratton, Debby (Dan) Swecker, Mark (Luanne) Steelhammer, and Glen (Clela) Steelhammer, all of Rochester; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister Yvonne Van Doren of Redding, California, and Page (Margaret) Steelhammer of Fords Prairie, Washington.
Mr. Steelhammer passed away at the age of 88.
